E-MAIL HOSTING: ON-PREMISES VS CLOUD

What is e-mail hosting and why does your business need it? Here we cover the difference between On-Premises Vs Cloud and the benefits of each.

What is E-mail Hosting?

E-mail hosting is a service that differs from a free webmail account in that it is advertisement free and specific to your domain name. It is utilised by almost all businesses, small, medium size as well as larger enterprises, although each type might utilise either on premises or online/cloud. The service also usually provides good security against things such as malware and spam, which we cover in more depth on our blog.

On-Premises

An On-Premise e-mail hosting service, as the name would suggest, is when a server(s) is kept on site and run through the company. This can be beneficial since the hardware does belong to the business, however hardware maintenance and upgrades can then become a problem. Furthermore, it does put more the security at risk and data loss is more prevalent in the case of disaster. Comparatively, cloud solutions are much easier to backup and recover if need be.

There is also generally a large initial investment in the hardware needed for this solution that is not necessary with cloud based hosting.

Cloud E-mail Hosting

Microsoft Office 365 is the most popular, best value for money and the most reliable cloud solution for e-mail hosting. Normally, it can be packaged with Exchange, Lunch, SharePoint as well as Microsoft Office Licensing. This is also a solution that can be implemented very quickly with a much lower initial set up cost than on premises hosting.

Microsoft Office 365 also boasts a guaranteed 99.9% availability on service with very little down time.

They even guarantee against disasters like floods, fires and more – no need to worry about an on-premises server failing and data loss in the case of emergency.

The Bottom Line on E-mail Hosting

Whilst traditional, on premises e-mail hosting servers have their uses, cloud hosting is the way of the future because of its higher security, low set up costs and minimal downtime. Plus, there is little to no management needed from the user’s end – Microsoft handles the maintenance and support and always keeps it up to date – no need for lengthy upgrades by your IT team.
